As I go back in time to write and share my most recent travel experiences, I couldn’t forget to share my very first solo trip to a Getaway house (now known as Postcard Cabins) in the Ozark Highlands of Missouri.
Thank you for reading this post, don’t forget to subscribe! If you’re unfamiliar to the concept, the recently renamed Postcard Cabins are 29 destinations in the US that offer tiny cabins located just two hours outside of any major city. These provide an immersive, peaceful retreat in nature where you can relax and recharge in the wilderness. It’s perfect if you like the idea of being in nature but not in a tent, like glamping if you will.
This made for the perfect time away from the city and civilization during my short weekend stay in the winter season of last year. I had yet to travel anywhere on my own, and had many places I had been dreaming to visit (and still do). Once I stumbled upon these cabins, I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity and free time I had off of work.
This short trip served as the best first solo travel experience, and allowed me to spend time in solitude and immersed in nature. Of course these cabins aren’t just for a solo getaway though, and are available to anyone and everyone looking to stay away.
What’s Inside

In each and every cabin on the property you are provided with ‘everything you need and nothing you don’t’, equipped with AC and heat, and also amenities such as lanterns, books, cards and even other items for purchase including snacks, hot chocolate, firewood and a fire starter.
Each cabin is thoughtfully named after the grandparent of a staff member or guest, and is securely accessible by a digital lock code, which makes check in and out seamless and stress-free.
For a true escape, a cell phone lock box is even provided to focus just on what’s around you. I personally didn’t take the digital detox, but if you do, you are still sure to be safe with the phone in each cabin connected to the staff and support on site.
Depending on the cabin of your choosing, you can rest easy on a luxurious and cozy queen bed or queen bunks right by a big window looking out into the view of nature, with blinds of course. This made for the perfect view to watch the sun rise and set and for watching the wildlife pass by.

Of course with the cabin being a little home away from home, you have a bathroom with all of the essentials including a hot shower and fluffy towels. They even provide shampoo, conditioner and body wash, all of which are natural and organic.
The all inclusive kitchen is inevitably a large factor of the cabin and comes equipped with everything you need to prepare a meal, including a mini fridge, all flatware and utensils, a pot, pan, mixing bowl and kettle, tin foil, a can opener, lighters, sugar, salt, pepper, and much, much more!
Provisions are also available for a small fee, allowing you to use anything you’d like and pay after your stay. A sample of what’s offered includes coffee, tea, hot chocolate, s’mores, water, and firewood and fire starters which are left in a campfire kit outside of each cabin.
At any time before or during your stay, you have the opportunity to purchase a Sustenance Box for $35, which includes additional meal and snack provisions like oatmeals, soups, pasta, candies, and more.

And of course, the cabin wouldn’t be a cabin without it’s own spot in nature! This piece of land right outside of each cabin includes a fire pit, grilling grate, and outdoor picnic table and chairs. This is where the firewood, charcoal and starters came in handy, especially on the cold nights while I was there.
Each destination for cabins around the US are designed with a series of individual cabins, allowing for your own little space. And although the cabins are private, it’s important to note that you will spot or encounter your neighbors cabins through the trees.
My Time At The Cabin
Before arriving onto the property of the Postcard Cabins, I had received the name of my cabin I would be staying in, and a map of all cabins and trails around in order to navigate my surroundings. The long gravel road there provided a view of several close by cow pastures and farms, and then of course led to each and every cabin.

I was given the Hector cabin, and was in close proximity to a nearby trail that I took a walk down the day after my arrival. There were several trails to explore all around, but due to the cold temperatures I stuck to just one nearby which did still offer good exercise and a nice breath of fresh air.

It’s worth noting that the location of the cabins in Osceola, Missouri were quite off-grid, and it was important to download an offline map when arriving onto the site. But of course, there is still wifi and cellular data that I was able to use!
My 2 Day Stay
The first day during my time at Hector, I visited a local gas station which was about a 20 minute drive out from the cabins, in order to get a few last minute items including water and snacks. Thankfully, I had also come prepared with extra items like pasta to cook for dinner that night, and a few other items to keep me covered during my time away.
Of course the cabins do provide really anything and everything you need, so there’s not a need for too much preparation. But regardless, and especially if you’re on a budget, it can be useful to plan for a few things ahead of time!
So my first evening at the cabin consisted of cooking a meal, being a simple pasta dish for one. I decided to make myself a chamomile tea from the provisions provided, and then spent the rest of the night in bed, looking out of the large window into nature and reading a new book.

It was an incredibly memorable experience to wake up to the view of the sunrise, trees, and deer passing by my window, which felt like a true nature retreat.

I spent my first and only full day at the cabin by taking a walk down the nearby trail, and returned to my cabin to make myself lunch and relax for the rest of the day. Later that evening, I decided to go outside and use the firewood and starters there for purchase to make myself a warm fire to sit by and to roast some s’mores.

Then, the next morning by 11 am it was time for me to leave my cabin and go back home. Unfortunately that night before my departure it had rained and frozen due to the cold temperatures though, which made for a very icy and slick exit.
Thankfully, I was notified by the Getaway team regarding the icy road conditions and their efforts to have them as cleared as soon as possible before I had to leave. So I waited nearly until the last minute to leave, and then made my slow exit off of the property and took the 2 hour drive back home.

I did thankfully check the weather forecast before I had left for my trip, but hadn’t expected the roads to be as icy as they were, which had almost caused me to crash.
With this being said, depending on the location of the Postcard Cabin you choose to stay at, I definitely recommend checking the weather forecast ahead of time to prepare and plan ahead of time, both for which dates line up with the best seasons and of course with your personal schedule!
Your Own Picture-Perfect Stay
You also have the opportunity through Postcard Cabins to DIY plan and host or be a part of a corporate meeting and retreat, or even to celebrate a wedding or family gathering!

They even offer a friend referral program and discounts for healthcare professionals, military, veterans, first responders, teachers and students!
